Horror crash

19/05/2008 8:26:00 AM
A YOUNG woman has died and three people have been injured in a head-on collision near Heathcote last night.

The woman, a 22-year-old student, was travelling south on the Northern Highway in a Hyundai sedan when she collided with a north-bound Ford Falcon on a sweeping bend around 6.20 pm, about five kilometres north of Heathcote.

Rural Ambulance Victoria officers tried unsuccessfully to revive the woman at the scene.

Her name had not been released at the time The Advertiser went to press.

The three occupants of the Ford - a woman, 52, and two men from Echuca - sustained minor injuries and were taken to Bendigo Hospital. The highway was closed for some time as emergency services worked to clear the scene but has since been re-opened.

Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.

Earlier in the day, the Northern Highway was closed to traffic when a sheep truck rolled over south of Tooborac about 2 pm.

No one was injured.

This latest fatality takes the state’s road toll to 134, 14 higher than for the same time last year.

Two other people died on Victorian roads over the weekend, one on Saturday at Drysdale and another at Keilor.
