WWII veteran recovers his lost medal

22/11/2008 8:27:00 AM
A LOCAL World War II veteran’s broken heart was mended this week when he was reunited with his lost medal.

Ces Shilling, 91, lost the medal on Remembrance Day.

“When I left the Kangaroo Flat cenotaph I travelled straight to Golden Square.

“I went behind a hardware store and got out of the car there.’’

Mr Shilling said since realising his medal was missing, he had returned to the hardware store area to search three times.

“On Monday I said to Verna (my wife) 'I’ve got a feeling that I should go out to Golden Square'.’’

Remarkably, Mr Shilling discovered the medal on the ground behind the hardware store.

“They’d shifted some of the gear.

“I looked around and there it was, on the ground just off the road.’’

Mr Shilling said his feelings on recovering the medal were “unexplainable’’.
