BENDIGO Bowls Club member Aaron Wilson has qualified for the semi-finals of the Australian Indoor Singles Championship.
The latest achievement in Wilson’s young career comes after the 17-year-old claimed his section on Sunday to qualify.
Wilson was selected in the under-18 Victorian Bowls Association state squad in November for lawn bowls, but during winter he is trying his hand at indoor bowls.
"You have to play six games to qualify and then about another five to win the competition, so it’s pretty tough," Wilson said yesterday.
"Some of the players have played for Australia, so it’s a strong competition," Wilson said.
Wilson started bowling little more than five years ago at North Bendigo, but transferred to Bendigo at the start of last summer to enhance his Victorian team prospects.
Younger brother Nathan also bowls and the duo is likely to dominate many local greens in the future.
The Australian Indoor Singles Championships will take place in October.
Wilson will continue to hone his bowling skills in the months leading up to the event.
He hopes to give a strong showing in the field of 32 by maintaining a focus and determination that belies his relatively young age.
"I’ll be working really hard between now and then and just trying to play really tight bowls," he said.
"I’ll probably do a fair bit of training at Bendigo Bowls Club and try to get on the carpet at some stage.
"Carpet is a bit more consistent, it’s a bit different to lawn, but you get used to it pretty quickly and just go on from there."
