MOTORCYCLISTS from across Bendigo are being encouraged to take part in a Melbourne protest ride against wire rope barriers and registration taxes.
Bendigo co-ordinator Warren West said the July 5 event was an organised protest against unfair motorcycle taxes and regulations.
“It’s all to do with the $56 tax that is placed on motorcycle registrations and the wire rope barriers, which we are not happy about,’’ Mr West said.
He said the ride was an opportunity for all motorcyclists to send a unified message.
“It is a protest to let the Government know that basically we’re not going to be shafted over these issues,’’ Mr West said.
“The Government talks about safety . . . and what we’re saying is that this tax is not going to any safety areas.’’
Mr West said revenue raised from the registration hike was originally marked for advertising and safety messages directed at motorcyclists.
“Then we hear the Government is using $300,000 or so of that to buy 10 motorcycles . . . They’re not supposed to be using the money for that,’’ he said.
The ride will take place in Melbourne, from Doncaster to Frankston.
Anyone interested in joining the ride to Melbourne is asked to phone Mr West on 0438 579 035.
Alternatively, riders can meet at the carpark behind the service station at Centro Lansell between 8.30 am and 9 am on July 5.
